XANTHOS ANCIENT CITY

XANTHOS: 46 km from Fethiye. Xanthos, located near the village of Kinik, was the largest administrative center of Lycia in antiquity. B.C. The city, which was independent until it was ruled by the Persians in 545, was completely burnt about a century later. After this fire the city was rebuilt, even in BC. II. In the nineteenth century it undertook the task of becoming the capital of the Lycian League. The city, which was later controlled by the Romans, entered the Byzantine sovereignty and remained under Byzantine rule until the Arab raids of the 7th century. This center, which has been influenced by the Lycian traditions, Hellenistic and Roman periods, was built in 1988 by the UNESCO World Heritage List.
